We Turned Spelling Upside Down

The Moving Beyond the Page spelling program has turned the process of spelling upside down. Instead of studying for and then taking a spelling test, students first take a test and then study only the words they don't already know.

Our spelling program will help your child:

• learn to spell more words correctly,
• spend less time doing so, and
• remember every spelling word at the end of the year.

Traditional Spelling Programs

In most spelling programs, students receive a new list of 7-10 words each week. During the week, students follow a pattern similar to the following:

This process is both inefficient and ineffective. Here are some problems:

• Students waste time studying words they already know how to spell instead of focusing on unknown words.
• Parents spend time dictating and grading tests instead of adding value by teaching spelling rules.
• Instead of receiving an immediate and corrective response on misspellings, students don't get feedback until the test is finished. 
• After the test, students may forget words they struggled with because they are off to a new list of words. 

Moving Beyond the Page Spelling Program

Our program is different.

Here is the process for the Moving Beyond the Page spelling program. All in, this process should take 30-45 minutes each week. 

• Each week starts with an online quiz. This quiz includes both new and review words. This quiz will identify the words that your child struggles with and add them to a practice list.
• Sometime after the quiz (either immediately or on a different day), you can work with your student on the practice list. We include spelling rules that you can review, or you can include other activities like writing the words or using each word in a sentence. 
• Future quizzes will continue to include words from the practice list until your child is spelling each one correctly. 

Our system is also very flexible. You can choose to complete multiple quizzes in a week or just one. If you finish a level, you can decide to retake it for a better score or move on to the next one if your child is ready.

Learn to Spell Every Word

Students can't finish a test until they have spelled every word correctly at least once. Words that are missed are added to a practice list that can be used by students for review. These words are also added to future quizzes as review words.

Remember All Words at Year End

Our spelling program is adaptive. When students misspell a word, they will continue receiving that word in future spelling tests until they can spell it correctly. At the end of the year, students should remember how to spell every single word they studied that year.

Parents and students make better use of their time. Students don't waste time practicing words they already know how to spell, and parents provide real value by teaching spelling rules instead of dictating and grading quizzes.

To get started with the Beyond the Page Spelling program, click here. If you purchased any curriculum from us in the past 18 months, you already have a complimentary license.  

Once you have made your purchase, you can access our Learning Gates/Spelling by logging onto our website, clicking the butterfly in the top right or middle of the page then clicking on the circle that says Learning Gates.  From there you will add a student and then choose the spelling level you would like to begin.
