I bought owl pellets off Amazon, had the kids dissect them and then make list of the number of animals that the owl consumed. We estimated the calories in each animal and eventually constructed an energy pyramid based on the owl pellet.

Bringing Back the Wolves How a Predator Restored An Ecosystem by Jude Isabella
This is a GREAT picture book to read during the Biome unit. The book is about what happened at Yellowstone National Park when the wolves were all killed to protect livestock. It's a real life example of how an ecosystem can be completely changed by one member being removed.
