Moral and Legal Questions - posted from Linton, ND
In this story, Tornado is a stray dog that shows up on Pete's farm one day. From the beginning, he and his parents acknowledged that they may have to give Tornado back to his owners if they are found. In chapter 6 this happens.
After Tornado returns to the farm five days later, the family decides that since they don't know the owner's name, they are just going to keep quiet and only give the dog back if the owners find them.
Many children will be interested in discussing the moral and legal implications of their decision. Here are some questions that will help you start a discussion about what is right or wrong about the decision that Pete and his family made.
- Do you think that Pete stole Tornado or did Tornado choose to go to the farm?
- Did they break the law? Which one? (Most localities now have a legal procedure for this situation.)
- How much effort should Pete and his parents go through to find the owner?
- Are they being dishonest by not allowing Tornado into town again?
- What should Pete and his dad do if they recognize the man and his daughter in town again?
- What if they found the original owners, but Tornado came back a third time?
- Does it matter that this was a community and time where dogs were not fenced in and could wander freely? Does it matter that Tornado could leave and go back home whenever he wanted?
These questions don't all have right or wrong answers. The important thing is to help your child to think through the issues so that she will be prepared when a similar situation happens in her own life.
