Red Lining - visual discrimination and racism - posted from Sebastian, FL
It helps sometimes to see how people were physically separated not just from what they could access but geographically, too. PBS did a writeup of what Red Lining is and how the practice has real-world implications on the health and lives of the people affected to this day. I used the maps of Red Lining to show what discrimination looked like from an overhead view.
I Am Not A Label - posted from Sonoita, AZ
Excellent video about being human.
The Ernest Green Story - posted from Dallas, TX
Nobody Gonna Turn me 'Round mentions the Little Rock Nine, including Ernest Green, the first black American to graduate from Central High in Arkansas. Disney made a historically accurate, clean movie of his story called The Ernest Green Story. It is a little hard to find, not on Netflix or Prime. To purchase the VHS is expensive, not to mention a DVD. I was able to get a DVD on inter-library loan for free.
Netflix Streaming - posted from McKinney, TX
We use netflix streaming for a lot of lessons in MBTP. For this lesson, we have watched The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman and we will watch Sounder.
The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman was an especially good fit. It is the story of a woman who was born a slave and lives to see the dawning of the Civil Rights Era. It shows her life via flashbacks while she tells her story to a reporter.
(Note: frequent use of a derogatory term used to describe Black Americans.)
