Lesson 1: What Is Independent Study?
- There is a system to follow in the independent study process.
Lesson 2: Select a Topic
- A research topic must be narrowed down from a broad area to a manageable focus area.
- A good topic for independent study is one that you are interested in and know something about but can learn more about.
Lesson 3: Developing Questions
- When writing research questions, consider the following:
- Will the information benefit people who are interested in the subject?
- Does the question require thinking, or can the question be answered in a few words or less?
- Could different people answer the question in different ways?
Lesson 4: Finding Information
- A bibliography is a page that cites all the sources from which information was gathered to prepare a paper or project.
- The table of contents (found in the front of a book) shows how the book is divided and provides page numbers for different divisions.
- The glossary (found in the back of the book) defines specific words found in the text that are important to the subject.
- The index (found at the back of a book) contains an alphabetical listing of terms and the page numbers where they are found in the book.
Lesson 5: Writing Your Report
- An outline helps you organize ideas for a report.
- A thesis statement summarizes the main ideas in your report.
