Lesson 1: Who Was He?
- A participle is a verb form that can be used as an adjective.
- Know these vocabulary words: reticent, patronize, restless, temperamental, patent, serene, emancipation, and allegiance.
Lesson 2: Childhood
- A participle phrase is made up of a participle along with other words that modify a noun or pronoun in a sentence.
- Expository writing is writing that provides information such as reports, lists, newspaper stories, speeches, biographies, magazine articles, and other informational writing.
Lesson 3: A Lawyer and Politician
- Every state has its own state government where decisions are made in regard to the people who live in the state.
- The federal government is made-up of elected officials from every state and makes decisions that are best for the country as a whole.
Lesson 4: Slavery
- A good speech states the speaker's position on an issue or topic and gives explanations for his or her reasoning.
- A good speaker uses body language effectively, shows enthusiasm, and avoids filler words like "um."
Lesson 5: Emancipation
- Frederick Douglass was an abolitionist who escaped slavery and was instrumental in fighting for freedom.
- An appositive is a noun or noun phrase that renames the noun beside it.
Lesson 6: Civil War
- Lincoln's Gettysburg Address is one of the most famous speeches in history.
- There were many reasons people chose to support or not support the Civil War.
- The Thirteenth Amendment to the Constitution prohibited slavery within the United States.
Lesson 7: Assassination
- Lincoln was murdered in Ford's Theater shortly after he began his second term in office.
- A newspaper report provides factual information about the circumstances surrounding an event, but it does so in an interesting way that engages the reader.
Lesson 8: Words and Memories
- Recall the major events in Lincoln's life.
