Lesson 1: Story Context
- Nations fighting against the United States in World War II were called Axis Powers.
- Nations fighting against the Axis powers were called Allied Powers, which included the U.S.
- Curacao is part of the Dutch Islands found off the coast of Venezuela.
Lesson 2: Curacao
- A hook is the first sentence or two of a book or essay that makes an impression on readers and makes them want to read more.
- Know the definitions of the following vocabulary words: dike, cargo, lulled, rage, mental, outrageous.
Lesson 3: Overboard
- Dialect is a distinct variety of language that differs from the standard language, and refers to pronunciation, grammar, and vocabulary.
- Quality writing pieces have sentences of varying lengths, rather than sentences that are short and choppy or wordy.
Lesson 4: Land
- A plural subject in a sentence requires a plural verb.
- A singular subject in a sentence requires a singular verb.
- A sentence that has two or more subjects connected by the word "and" requires a plural verb.
- A sentence that has two or more singular subjects connected by the word "or" requires a singular verb.
Lesson 5: Stranded
- A preposition is a word that begins a prepositional phrase. It often indicates location (like in, on, under).
- A prepositional phrase is a group of words that begins with a preposition and ends with an object of the preposition (noun or pronoun).
Lesson 6: Work
- A comma is used in a sentence after a response of "yes" or "no." (Yes, you can get have dessert after dinner.)
- A comma is used after a direct address. (Leslie, bring me your new book.)
- Sometimes people are discriminated against because they look different.
Lesson 7: Different Cultures
- Varied sentence beginnings make writing more interesting.
- Sentences can begin in a variety of ways — with prepositional phrases, adjective, adverb, verbal, article, noun, pronoun, etc.
- A verbal is a verb form (like "swimming" or "alarmed") that functions as a noun or adjective in a sentence.
- Scientists classify animals according to similarities and differences.
- Animals can be classified as vertebrates (animals with backbones) and invertebrates (animals without backbones).
Lesson 8: Fishing
- A hurricane impacts a much broader area than a tornado.
Lesson 9: The Storm
- The steps of the writing process include organization (pre-writing), rough draft, revising, editing, and final copy.
Lesson 10: Survival
- When you revise a piece of writing, you improve the overall writing by varying sentence length, combining sentences, varying sentence beginnings, selecting more interesting words to make the writing more descriptive and engaging, and/or reorganizing some sentences so ideas make sense.
- Editing your writing involves finding and correcting misspelled words as well as grammar and punctuation errors.
- Paragraphs should be indented.
