Facts and Definitions
Lesson 1: Heat Causes Change
- Heat is warmth.
- Heat causes change.
- The sun and fire give off heat.
- Molecules are the tiny building blocks that make up solids, liquids, and gases.
- Conduction is the transfer of heat from one molecule to another.
Lesson 2: Earthquakes and Volcanoes
- Earthquakes occur when there is shaking, rolling, or a sudden movement of the earth's surface.
- Volcanoes occur when sections of the earth's crust, called plates, rub against one another and produce heat. This heat causes the rocks below to vibrate and to be come very hot, turning the rocks to magma.
- Magma is liquid rock that is beneath the earth's surface.
- Lava is the magma that is released from the vent of the volcano.
Lesson 3: People and the Environment
- An urban community is a large city.
- A suburban community is a smaller town or area that is located right outside a larger community.
- A rural community is a very small community that is not as near to a large city as a suburb.
Lesson 4: People Change the Environment

- The environment is changed when new homes and neighborhoods are built.
- Irrigation is when farmers bring water from other sources and use it on their crops.
- Pesticides are chemicals that are sprayed on crops to keep away bugs that could harm the crops.
- When trees are cut down in large numbers we call it logging.
- Coal mining is when people go beneath the earth's surface to get coal.
Lesson 5: Pollution
- Water pollution occurs when harmful substances are dumped into a water source such as a river or the ocean.
- Air pollution occurs when harmful substances are released into the air.
- Recycle means to reuse materials.
Lesson 6: A River Ran Wild
- Factories can pollute rivers.
- Native Americans (Indians) lived in North America before settlers came.
Lesson 7: Animals in the Environment
