- A meteorologist is a scientist who studies the weather.
Lesson 2: The Air Around Us
- Air pressure is the weight of air pressing down on the Earth.
- Warm air is lighter than cold air, so it rises.
- Low air pressure means stormy weather is coming.
- High air pressure means clear weather is coming.
- A barometer is a tool that is used to measure changes in air pressure.
Lesson 3: Heat and Temperature
- The Sun heats the Earth.
- A thermometer is a tool used to find the temperature of something.
Lesson 4: The Wind
- Wind is air moving in the environment.
- Wind speed is measured with an instrument called an anemometer.
- A weather vane (or wind vane) is a tool that shows the direction the wind is blowing.
Lesson 5: Precipitation
- Precipitation is rain, snow, hail, sleet, or any form of water that falls from the sky.
- A rain gauge measures the amount of rainfall.
- Rain, snow, hail, and sleet are all forms of precipitation.
Lesson 6: The Clouds Above Us
- A cloud is a collection of condensed water droplets or ice crystals that you can see. Clouds float in the sky.
Lesson 7: Wild Weather
- A hurricane is a very large storm that usually starts in the ocean with strong winds and heavy rains.
- A tornado is a violent windstorm in the shape of a funnel.
- Tornadoes and hurricanes can be dangerous and can cause damage.
- There are warning signs for tornadoes, hurricanes, and flash floods.
Lesson 8: Reason for the Season
- The Earth revolves or orbits around the Sun one time every year.
- The Earth tilts on an axis.
- The hemisphere closest to the Sun has the warmest weather.
Lesson 9: Geography and Weather
- The weather in an area depends on environmental factors as well as geographical factors.
- The seasons occur because of the Earth's placement in relation to the Sun.
- On the same day, the weather will be different in different geographical locations.
Lesson 10: Habitats and Weather
- Animals have features that help them survive in extreme environments.
- The weather is different in different habitats.
