Lesson 1: Where You Live
- We can describe location by relating one landmark to another, such as the river is north of the hill.
Lesson 2: Types of Maps
- A political map shows boundaries between regions and cities in an area.
- A resource map shows the natural resources found in a region.
- A physical map shows landforms and bodies of water in a region.
- A road map shows highways and roads found in an area.
- Some maps may represent more than one type of map.
Lesson 3: Reading Maps
- Cardinal directions are north, south, east, and west.
- The ordinal directions are northeast, southeast, northwest, and southwest.
- A map grid is a combination of numbers and letters that is used to identify the location of places on a map.
- A map key explains what the symbols on a map mean.
Lesson 4: Natural Resources
- Natural resources can come from the ground, plants, or animals.
- People are dependent on natural resources for food and other products.
Lesson 5: Conserving Natural Resources
- Conservation means to save and use carefully.
- Natural resources can be renewable — they are replaced by nature as they are used.
- Nonrenewable natural resources can run out over time because nature cannot replace them or they are used more rapidly than they are replaced.
Lesson 6: Environment of the United States
- The U.S. can be divided into five regions: Northeast, Southeast, Midwest, Southwest, and West.
- Every state has a city that is the state capital.
Lesson 7: Farming In the U.S.
- Arable farming grows crops such as vegetables and grain.
- Pastoral farming raises animals such as cattle, pigs, and hens.
- Mixed farming grows crops and raises animals.
Lesson 8: My Environment
- When the seasons change, the environment changes.
- The temperature in the environment changes with the seasons.
