Lesson 1: What's in a Name
- Names always begin with capital letters.
- The suffix (end of a word) "-less" means "without" (painless, helpless, useless)
- The suffix (end of a word) "-ful" means "full of" (painful, helpful, useful)
Lesson 2: Why Worry?
- A conjunction is a word that joins together words and ideas.
- "And" and "but" are examples of conjunctions.
Lesson 3: Is It a Problem?
- Personification is when an author makes an object or idea do things a person might do.
- Idioms are creative phrases that don't mean what they actually say but mean something else.
Lesson 4: Comparing Characters
- A Venn diagram is a graphic you can use to compare and contrast two things.
- A summary is a short description of a story that includes only the main points of the story.
- When something causes something else to happen we call it a cause.
- The result of a cause is called the effect.
Lesson 5: The Raft
- The setting is the place where the story happens.
- The characters are the people or animals in a story.
Lesson 6: Positive and Negative Change
- Cause and effect situations can result in positive change or negative change.
