Lesson 1: The Move
- A reaction is how a person responds to something that happens.
- rate: degree of speed
- convinced: persuaded
- racial: relating to race or ethnic background
- sarcastic: a sneering or cutting remark
- approval: permission
- glum: sad and gloomy
Lesson 2: Meeting the Neighbors
- Racial relationships describe the interactions between people from different racial backgrounds.
- A fact is something that can be proven.
- An opinion is a belief or personal view that cannot be proven.
Lesson 3: The Softball Game
- The verb of a third-person singular subject usually has an "s" on the end.
- To form the past tense of most verbs, you add -ed to the end. For verbs that end in "e," you drop the "e" before adding -ed. Verbs that don't follow these rules are called irregular verbs.
Lesson 4: A New Dog
- Sentences can be written in past tense when talking about something that happened before.
- Sentences that talk about something that is happening now are written in present tense.
- Sentences that talk about something that will happen are written in future tense.
Lesson 5: A Visit from Germs
- Characters in books often have problems in their relationships.
Lesson 6: A New Petition
- crusader: a person who works hard for social change
- questionnaire: a set of questions used for a survey
- firmly: in a determined way
- jotted: wrote something quickly
- frantically: in a fast and disorganized manner
- permission: authorization to do something
Lesson 7: The Swim Club
- Contractions are words that are formed when two words are combined. One or more letters are left out and an apostrophe is inserted where the missing letter(s) should be.
Lesson 8: Moving
- The verb tense must be consistent throughout a piece of writing.

- Martin Luther King Jr. was an African-American man who spent his life trying to help people of different races treat one another fairly and with respect.
- "I Have a Dream" is a famous speech given my Martin Luther King Jr.
Lesson 11: The End
- The theme of a story is the main idea or author's message in a story. Stories can have multiple themes.
- The protagonist is the main character, sometimes a hero, in a story.
- The antagonist is the character who struggles against the protagonist.
- Setting is the time and place when the story occurs.
