Forces of Nature
Unit Review Sheet
These facts and definitions should be mastered throughout this unit. This page can be used for periodic review and study as you are finishing the unit and in the future.
Facts and Definitions
Lesson 1: Physics and Force
- Objects at rest will remain at rest unless acted upon by a force.
- The science of the study of force is called physics.
- Vocabulary: force, gravity, inertia, and friction.
Lesson 2: Friction
- Friction is a force that hinders motion.
- Friction can be minimized or maximized depending on the surfaces rubbing against each other.
Lesson 3: Laws of Motion
- The three laws of motion describe how forces make things move.
- Inertia is the resistance of an object to changes in motion.
Lesson 4: Gravity
- Gravity pulls objects to the Earth at the same rate, regardless of how much they weigh.
- Centripetal force pulls objects inward when they are turning in a circle.
- Air friction can cause objects that are different shapes to fall at different rates.
Lesson 5: Projectiles
- An object that is thrown or shot by a force is called a projectile.
- Gravity is the force acting upon a projectile, causing it to follow a curved path.
Lesson 6: Energy
- Types of energy include potential, kinetic, thermal, light, chemical, sound, and electric.
- Potential energy is stored energy.
Lesson 7: Pressure and Force Change the Environment
- Pressure measures the amount that a pushing force is spread out over a large area or concentrated in a small one.
- An earthquake is caused by rocks that shift with great force.
- A glacier is a very large sheet of slowly moving ice.
- A volcano occurs as a result of molten rock being driven upward by pressure.
- The layers of the Earth are the crust, mantle, and core.
