Facts and Definitions
Lesson 1: Soil
- Soil is made up of sand, silt, gravel, clay, and organic matter (rotting things that were once living, i.e., dead leaves and twigs).
- The layers of soil include humus, topsoil, subsoil, and parent material.
Lesson 2: Plants
- A flowering plant has flowers, and a nonflowering plant has no flowers.
- A woody plant survives from one year to the next and has a stem that contains wood.
- An herbaceous plant has leaves and stems that die at the end of the growing season.
Lesson 3: Seeds
- The parts of a seed are the seed coat, stored food, and the embryo.
- Germination is the process through which a seed grows into a plant.
- The male part of a plant is the stamen, and the female part is the pistil.
Lesson 4: Photosynthesis
- Photosynthesis is the process by which a plant makes its own food.
Lesson 5: Trees
- Evergreen trees do not change colors in the fall and winter.
- Deciduous trees are trees that lose all their leaves for part of the year.
Lesson 6: Compost and Decomposers
- Decomposition is the process by which dead plants and animals are broken down into simpler substances.
- Decomposers are the living things that break down dead plants and animals in the soil.

- A variety of products in our home come from plants.
