Dividing Fractions
Unit Review Sheet
These facts and definitions should be mastered throughout this unit. This page can be used for periodic review and study as you are finishing the unit and in the future.
Facts and Definitions
Lesson 1: Reviewing Division
- Division can be thought of as dividing a group of objects into smaller groups with equal parts or as repeated subtraction.
Lesson 2: Getting Ready to Divide Fractions
- [none]
Lesson 3: Dividing Unit Fractions by Whole Numbers
- Unit fraction: a fraction that has a numerator of 1
- Algorithm: sequence of steps to follow when completing a math operation
- The reciprocal of any fraction is when the numerator and the denominator are flipped. For example, the reciprocal of 2/1 is 1/2.
- To divide a unit fraction by a whole number, you keep the first fraction, switch the division sign to a multiplication sign, flip the second fraction (to create its reciprocal), and then solve the problem.
Lesson 4: Dividing Whole Numbers by Unit Fractions
- To divide a whole number by a unit fraction, change the whole number to a fraction (for example, from 3 to 3/1), switch the division sign to a multiplication sign, flip the second fraction (to create its reciprocal), and then solve the problem.
Lesson 5: More Division Practice
- [none]
Lesson 6: Unit Review and Test
- [none]
Final Project: Fraction Division Pamphlets
