Unit Review Sheet
These facts and definitions should be mastered throughout this unit. This page can be used for periodic review and study as you are finishing the unit and in the future.
Facts and Definitions
Lesson 1: Customary and Metric Units
- Standard units of measurement: agreed upon units of measurement that are typically used (for example, inch, foot, centimeter, meter)
- Customary system: the main system of measurement used in the United States, also called the US Customary System
- Metric system: the system of measurement used in most countries other than the United States, based on the number 10
- Length: how long, wide, or high something is (length can also measure distances)
- Weight: how heavy or light something is
- Liquid volume: how much liquid is in a container
- Capacity: how much liquid a container will hold
Lesson 2: Converting Units of Length
- Equivalent customary lengths: 12 inches = 1 foot; 3 feet = 1 yard; 5280 feet = 1 mile; 1760 yards = 1 mile
- Equivalent metric lengths: 10 millimeters = 1 centimeter; 100 centimeters = 1 meter; 1000 millimeters = 1 meter
- Metric length abbreviations: millimeter = mm; centimeter = cm; meter = m
- Customary length abbreviations: inch = in.; foot = ft; yard = yd; mile = mi
Lesson 3: Converting Units of Weight
- Equivalent customary weights: 16 ounces = 1 pound; 2000 pounds = 1 ton
- Customary weight abbreviations: ounce = oz, pound = lb; ton = T
- Equivalent metric weights: 1000 milligrams = 1 gram; 1000 grams = 1 kilogram
- Metric weight abbreviations: milligram = mg; gram = g; kilogram = kg
Lesson 4: Converting Units of Capacity
- Equivalent customary capacity: 1 tablespoon = 3 teaspoons; 1 fluid ounce = 2 tablespoons; 1 cup = 8 fluid ounces; 1 pint = 2 cups; 1 quart = 2 pints; 1 gallon = 4 quarts
- Customary capacity abbreviations: teaspoon = tsp; tablespoon = tbsp; fluid ounce = fl oz; cup = c; pint = pt; quart = qt; gallon = gal
- Equivalent metric capacity: 1000 milliliters = 1 liter
- Metric capacity abbreviations: milliliter = ml; liter = l or L
Lesson 5: Practice and Problem Solving
- A line plot is a graph that shows information along a number line. Each X above a number equals one person or thing being measured.
Lesson 6: Working With Time
- There are 60 seconds in a minute, 60 minutes in an hour, 24 hours in a day, and 7 days in a week
- One year is equal to 12 months, 52 weeks, or 365 days
- A leap year is 366 days long and occurs every 4 years
- A decade is 10 years, a century is 100 years, and a millennium is 1000 years
Lesson 7: Reviewing Perimeter and Area
- Area: the measure of space within a plane or two-dimensional shape, the number of square units within a plane or two-dimensional shape
- Perimeter: the distance around a plane or two-dimensional shape
- The perimeter of a shape is the sum of all of its sides
- The area of a rectangle is its length times its width
