These facts and definitions should be mastered throughout this unit. This page can be used for periodic review and study as you are finishing the unit and in the future.
Facts and Definitions
Lesson 1: Back to the Geometry Basics
- Attribute: a characteristic of an object
- Plane shape: a flat, two-dimensional shape (2D)
- Solid shape: a shape that has three dimensions and is NOT flat (3D)
- Polygon: a closed, plane shape that is made up of three or more straight sides
- Side: a line that connects with other lines to make a polygon
- Vertex: the point where two sides of a polygon meet
- Angle: the space created inside a polygon where the sides meet
- Triangle: a polygon that has three sides
- Square: a polygon that has four sides of equal length
- Congruent shapes: shapes that are the same shape and size
- Regular polygon: a polygon that has equal sides
- Irregular polygon: a polygon that has sides that are not equal
Lesson 2: Parallel (and Other) Lines
- Parallel lines: lines that are the same distance apart and never meet
- Intersecting lines: lines that cross each other or meet
- Perpendicular lines: lines that cross each other and create L shapes (right angles) where they meet
Lesson 3: What Is a Quadrilateral?
- Quadrilateral: a polygon that has 4 sides, 4 angles, and 4 vertices
Lesson 4: Getting To Know Specific Quadrilaterals
- Rhombus: a quadrilateral that has equal sides and 2 pairs of parallel sides
- Parallelogram: a quadrilateral that has 2 pairs of parallel sides and opposite sides of equal length
- Trapezoid: a quadrilateral that has only 1 pair of parallel lines
