Facts and Definitions
Lesson 1: What Is a Fraction?
- Whole: all of an object or all of a group
- Part: a piece of an object or a group that makes a whole when combined with other pieces
- Fraction: part of a whole, a piece of something larger
- When an object or shape is divided into two equal pieces, the pieces are called halves.
- When an object or shape is divided into four equal pieces, the pieces are called quarters.
Lesson 2: Naming Fractions
- Numerator: the top number in a fraction, how many parts of the whole you have or need
- Denominator: the bottom number in a fraction, the total number of equal parts in a whole
Lesson 3: Fraction Parts
- If the denominators are the same in two fractions, the fraction with the larger numerator is the larger fraction. (3/4 is bigger than 2/4).
- If the numerators are the same in two fractions, the fraction with the smaller denominator is the larger fraction. (1/2 is bigger than 1/3)
Lesson 4: More Fraction Exploration
- Unit fractions: fractions that have a numerator of 1
- In a fraction, when the numerator and denominator are the same, the fraction is equal to one whole or 1. (4/4 = 1)
- In a fraction, if the numerator is half of the denominator, the fraction is equal to one-half. (4/8 = 1/2)
