These facts and definitions should be mastered throughout this unit. This page can be used for periodic review and study as you are finishing the unit and in the future.
Facts and Definitions
Lesson 1: Getting to Know Attributes
- Attribute: a characteristic of an object such as size, shape, color, or thickness
Lesson 2: Making and Naming Polygons
- Polygon: a closed, flat shape that is made up of three or more straight sides
- Triangle: a polygon that has three sides
- Square: a polygon that has four sides that are the same length
- Rectangle: a polygon that has 2 pairs of opposite sides that differ in length
- Pentagon: a polygon that has five sides
- Hexagon: a polygon that has six sides
- Heptagon: a polygon that has seven sides
- Octagon: a polygon that has eight sides
- Nonagon: a polygon that has nine sides
- Decagon: a polygon that has ten sides
- Dodecagon: a polygon that has twelve sides
- Circle: a closed, flat shape that has only one curved side
Lesson 3: Polygon Attributes
- Side: a line that makes part of a shape or polygon
- Angle: the space created inside a shape where the sides meet
- Vertex: the point where two sides of a shape or polygon meet
- Regular: a shape that has sides that are all the same length
- Irregular: a shape that has sides that are NOT all the same length
Lesson 4: Quadrilaterals
- Quadrilateral: a polygon that has four sides
Lesson 5: Shaping Up!
- [none]
Lesson 6: Fun With Tessellations and Tangrams
- Tessellation: a picture made up of a repeated pattern of shapes that fit together but do not overlap
- Tangram: a Chinese puzzle made of a square divided into seven pieces that are used to create images or designs
Lesson 7: Dividing Shapes
- Partition: to divide
- Half: one part of two equal parts that make a whole
- Third: one part of three equal parts that make a whole
- Fourth: one part of four equal parts that make a whole
Lesson 8: Solid Shapes
- 2-dimensional (2D): flat, "plane"
- 3-dimensional (3D): not flat, has three dimensions (height, width, depth)
- Cube: a 3D solid made up of 6 squares
- Cone: a 3D solid that has one base in the shape of a circle
- Cylinder: a 3D solid that has two bases in the shape of circles
- Prism: a 3D solid that has two bases — a flat top base and a flat bottom base — neither of which are in the shape of a circle
- Pyramid: a 3D solid that has one base that is not in the shape of a circle; it has a pointy top and a flat bottom base
- Sphere: a 3D solid that is shaped like a ball
- Face: a flat surface that makes up a solid or a polyhedron
- Edge: a straight line on a polyhedron where faces meet
- Polyhedron: a 3D solid made up of many faces
- Base: the "end" of a solid shape, determines the name of the solid (ex. a square pyramid has a square base)
- Vertex: corner or point where edges on a solid shape meet
