Lesson 1: Tragedy in Mexico
- Know the following Spanish vocabulary: campesino (peasant), fiesta (party), vaqueros (cowboys), nieta (granddaughter), abuelita (grandmother), rosa (rose), tío (uncle), mija (daughter), ratón (mouse), and mona (pretty).
- The Great Depression was an economic crisis in America that started with the stock market crash in 1929 and lasted throughout the 1930s.
- The table of contents is a list of the chapters or headings in a book and the pages on which they start.
Lesson 2: Escape
- Use quotation marks to show the exact words that someone spoke or wrote.
- Use quotation marks with the names of short works like poems, short stories, chapter titles, songs, and magazine or newspaper articles.
Lesson 3: Train Ride
- Know the rules for writing dialogue.
Lesson 4: Los Angeles
- The Dust Bowl occurred between 1930 and 1936; it was a period of severe dust storms that caused major ecological and agricultural damage to the prairie lands in America.
Lesson 5: Home Sweet Home
- A problem-solution paragraph follows this structure: a) States a problem in the topic sentence. b) Explains why the problem exists in the next two or three sentences. c) Provides a solution to the problem and details related to the solution in the following two or three sentences. d) Reminds the reader of the problem and the benefit of the proposed solution in the concluding sentence. It should also leave the reader thinking about the topic or feeling an emotion about the topic.

- Cesar Chavez was a labor leader who encouraged the Latino community to fight for equal treatment and fair wages.
- Transition words and phrases make writing flow more smoothly, and they help logically connect one paragraph to the next.

- Some reasons migrant workers decided to strike included to get improvements where they work, to receive more money, to get shorter working days, to stop their wages going down, and because they think their company has been unfair.
