Lesson 1: Your State's Natural History
- Be able to identify significant landforms and bodies of water in your state.
- Be familiar with a map of your state. You will be creating a large map that you can use throughout this unit.
Lesson 2: Flora and Fauna
- Be sure that you can name 2-3 native plants and 2-3 native animals in your state.
- Learn about some non-native invasive species of plants and animals in your state.
- Discover some of the threatened or endangered plants and animals in your state.
Lesson 3: Native Populations
- Indigenous means native to a place.
Lesson 4: The History of Your State
- Be familiar with a general timeline of your state's history.
- Be able to explain at least five events or time periods in your state's history to an interested listener.
Lesson 5: State Leaders
- Be able to name a few leaders from your state's history and a few leaders from your state in the present day.
- Think about the role of leaders in different areas of a society — politics, business and industry, social activism, education, entertainment and the arts, and more.
Lesson 6: Your State by the Numbers
- How your state has grown over time.
- Where the counties in your state with the highest population are.
- How state funds are spent in your state.
Lesson 7: Your State's Economy
- Know some of the major industries and employers of your state.
- Know how your state compares, in terms of its economic production, to other states.
Lesson 8: Your State and the Arts
- A few famous authors, artists, and musicians from your state.
