- An independent clause is a group of words that contains a subject and verb and can stand by itself as a complete sentence.
- A dependent clause is a group of words that contains a subject and verb but is not a complete thought; it must be attached to an independent clause so it will make sense.

- A mortgage is a loan used to finance the purchase of real estate.
- Interest is the fee charged by the bank (or lender) to the borrower, who uses the money for a purchase.

Lesson 5: The Market
- The Jim Crow Laws were state and local laws in the U.S. enacted between 1876 and 1965 in southern states. They mandated racial segregation in all public facilities, with a supposedly "separate but equal" status for black Americans. In reality, this led to treatment and accommodations that were usually inferior to those provided for white Americans, creating a number of economic, educational, and social disadvantages.
- Coordinating conjunctions join together clauses of equal importance. The coordinate conjunctions are the FANBOYS: for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so.
- Subordinating conjunctions show that one clause is dependent on another clause for meaning. Subordinate conjunctions begin clauses that tell when (before, while), why (because, since), or under what condition (if, unless) the main clause takes place.

- Racism during the twentieth century stemmed from slavery. Many white people continued to believe that black people were not people like everyone else and were not as good as white people.

- A group of people who act together to stop shopping at a business or purchasing goods or services as an act of protest against the business's unethical practices are boycotting.
- The Montgomery Bus Boycott was a boycott of the city bus system by the African-American community. The boycott resulted in a Supreme Court ruling that desegregated buses.

- Sharecropping is a farming system where a landowner allows families to live on and farm a piece of his land in exchange for a percentage of the sale of the crop.
