Lesson 1: Background on the Civil War
- Primary source is a term used to describe source material that is closest to the person, information, period, or idea being studied.
- Secondary sources were created after a historical event by people who were not at the event. These people use primary sources to summarize or analyze what happened during the event.
- Secede (secession) means to withdraw from an organization or union.
Lesson 2: Pink and Say
- Helping verbs are words that work with the main verb(s) in a sentence to help express action or a state of being. Together, helping verbs and main verbs form a verb phrase.
Lesson 3: Joining the Ranks
- Propaganda is a form of communication aimed at influencing the attitude of a community toward a cause or position. As opposed to only providing facts, propaganda is used primarily to influence an audience.
Lesson 4: Ready for Battle
- Linking verbs tell us something about the subject of a sentence.
Lesson 5: Nerves
- The present participle is the "-ing" form of a verb.
- The past participle is the "-ed" form of the verb. Some verbs are irregular, meaning that the past participle does not end in "ed."
Lesson 6: The Battle Begins
- The verbs lay and set are always followed by a direct object.
- The verbs lie and sit can never take a direct object.

- The Confederate Army won the battle of Bull Run.
Final Project: Argumentative Essay
- An argumentative essay is one where the writer presents an argument and takes a stand to defend his or her stance on the argument.
